It shouldn’t snow this close to the shore. Drifting snowflakes serve as silent testament to the strange times they live in. The sheriff watches them from his table. Other than the occasional hipster, most of whom are around Sol’s age, speaking to their sheriff, the unlikely twosome are left alone. [break][break]
Navy favors his right hand when using the chopsticks. When the left hand is called to action, it shakes like the last rope yet to snap on an old bridge. He doesn’t call attention to it, but he winces sometimes. War wounds are a warrior’s pride, but he isn’t keen to show this young man weakness. [break][break]
“Not every day someone goes for a dive down into the cave.” The words are calm, analytical, a hint of a playful edge. “You’re dedicated to your research, I’ll give you that.” He adds a pinch of salt to the ramen. [break][break]
“So, what’s your story? Don’t strike me as the mysterious type. You from Hoenn, or are you joining us from abroad?”

A ramen shop was quite the odd place for a follow-up meeting but Sol was more than happy to be there. Navy had made it sound like if this went well he could get access to the League's research - and he had always wanted to try ramen. His brother had talked about it a few times when they lived in Kanto for Sol's treatments, but they had never been able to share some whilst they lived there.

Sol tapped his chopsticks to the side of his bowl absent-mindedly. Unlike Navy, Sol favored his left hand although not for any important reason. He had just always been a lefty. He gives thought to how he'll answer Navy. What is his story? Should he tell the truth? The whole truth?

"I'm from Kalos, originally." That's a good start, he thinks. "My family and I moved around a whole lot when I was younger so I don't have too many memories of it. We're from Anistar, specifically. Still own a house there, I think. I'm not sure anymore."

He tries not to give home too much of his thoughts. It always makes him melancholic.

"My mom is an astronomer, she's got, like, an obsession with celestial bodies. Hence the name Solstice. My dad was a businessman. He traded in all sorts of things, I think, we didn't talk about his job much. My older brother was a professional battler for a time. Used to host unofficial tournaments and stuff." Sol's sentence had trailed off and he had stopped looking at Navy directly, he was looking past him if anything, lost in what he had been saying.

At the mention of the age Nineteen, the sheriff’s eyes grow distant. Though he looks in Sol’s direction, he seems more focused on something behind the younger man.[break][break]

Dumping that albatross onto Sol would do neither of them any good. He chalks Sol and Gabe’s Charizard sharing a nickname up to good taste.[break][break]
“Anything you wanna tell. Not really prodding for anything. Well,” a moment later, he corrects himself, “guess there’s one thing.”[break][break]
“You seem like a smart guy, Sol. Smart enough to get yourself in trouble, if you’re not careful. You’re from Kalos, huh? Sure you’ve heard how dangerous things are over here. Gods and monsters are everywhere in Hoenn. What brought you here? Adventure? Chance for the discovery of a lifetime?”[break][break]
His eyes settle upon Sol again with renewed sharpness. He thinks he knows the answer.[break][break]

It seems they both were lost in their own worlds for a moment. Sol recognized the vacancy in Navy's eyes, he saw it in the mirror from time to time. He decided against mentioning it. They had just met, after all, and the last thing he needed was to spill all of his beans to this man.

Sol smiles at Navy's assessment of him, he had always loved being psychoanalyzed. He usually preferred it when his friends did it, he thought of it as a fun game: 'How Well Do You Know Sol?' But having the sheriff do it was almost as good.

As the older man spoke, he desperately tried to get his chopsticks to pick up more than one noodle at a time. Laughing behind his hand, Sol spoke, "It might seem that way, huh? Given how I talk sometimes." He gave up on his chopsticks, setting them down.

"Purpose. I came here for a purpose." There was melancholy to those words, something he wasn't quite saying.

Since he wanted to get something from Navy, he supposed he'd pay for it with his honesty.

"I was a sick kid," He held up a finger, "But I don't want your pity. I have enough to last me three lifetimes. Anyways, I was sick. My parents had to pay out the nose to get me the best treatment they could and they didn't get results for a really long time, so the only thing they ever got was me. And, yeah, I'm pretty great. But just being me never feels like enough."

"Ugh, word vomit. Probably a bit too much information for a stranger. Whatever, you'll live." Sol waved his hand dismissively, "So I came here. Specifically for Gods and Monsters but also to find something more. Something worth my life and all that it cost my parents to give to me."

At some point, his eyes had drifted downwards to where his hands had started fidgeting awkwardly. It was hard to be vulnerable, especially to a stranger. But it was worth it for Nihilego and whatever info Navy would give him for his honesty. "What about you? What's your damage?"

And there it is, an opening. Vulnerability like you only get in these quiet moments, steeping food while snow drifts out the window. Navy spares Sol no pity, for pity is a poor foundation. Instead, he gives the younger man a little piece of himself.[break][break]
“Had a little brother. Same age as you, actually. Our parents died when I was a little younger than you are now. There I was, sixteen, with an eight year old brother. Had to pull a lot of all-nighters, do a lot of stuff I’m not proud of to keep him up. Social services were pretty bad, back during Monroe’s administration.” Would that dahlia goode was afforded the opportunity to be a proper peacetime commissioner, he thinks she would do wonders for this region.[break][break]
“Back when he was seventeen, got it into his head he wanted to be somebody. Went and got himself killed fighting Rocket. Wasn’t one of the big wigs who killed him. Don’t really know who did it, guess it doesn’t matter. He’s gone. Miss him still. Every day.” Sincerity is his curse, and he doles it out on Sol. The words are spoken with a soldier’s reserved detachment, cutting himself off from the pain just enough to speak.[break][break]
“So, let me say from experience, they’re happy just to have you, man. Just happy that you’re happy. Happy you’re alive.” Another sigh of reservation. “But that’s not gonna stop you, is it? Not gonna let the world pass you by. Here.”[break][break]
He holds up his own chopsticks, clenching them almost like someone would clench a pencil. Twirling them around in his hands, he shows all angles of the correct way to hold them. Not thinking, he reaches over and picks up Sol’s, trying to fit them into his right hand properly.[break][break]
“Hold ‘em like this. Thing about it like you’re trying to hold a pencil. Herd the noodles like they’re a wooloo, pincer ‘em while they’re together.”

He wished he could feign sympathy for Navy, or perhaps fake a tear for his story...but his emotions were all real. It hurt to hear, resonated too close to home. Sol grimaced, "That must have been hard for you."

Had they been closer, Sol might have offered him more. They had a lot more in common than one would think at first glance. Sol was living proof that looks can be deceiving and yet he is so frequently taught that lesson... "Believe it or not, I know that. It's me. I'm my problem. I'm the one that thinks this way. No amount of her being happy for me is going to be enough until I feel like I've earned it."

He chewed on his lip, tearing on the skin with his teeth, an old habit he tried not to partake in anymore. His eyes followed Navy's hands, but the sheriff didn't have Sol's full focus. Instead, something was itching on his mind. A singular thought that was pestering him even as Navy used silly comparisons - which did earn a smile from Sol.

"I appreciate your concern, by the way. I'm sure my family would too - pardon me," Sol retrieved his chopsticks and began trying to use them as Navy had shown to (mild) success, "I, um, I'm not sure how to say this...do I remind you of him? Is that why we're here? Because I don't - erm, never mind, forget I even asked. It was insensitive."

Sol's face was flushed tomato red and he began shoveling as much ramen down his gullet as he could. What was wrong with him? Why would he ask that? And why was he shoveling the food down his throat? It burned! A lot! He didn't let it cool down enough!

“Slow down.” He chides, concern overriding whatever he felt before. “You’re gonna burn your throat.” Or force him to write the funniest cause of death in Dewford history. Choked to death on ramen soup. There’s worse ways to go, he supposes.[break][break]
“You don’t remind me of him anymore than someone else your age.” After saying those words, he smiles. “Although it’s funny, imagining if you two met. He’d trip over his words trying to talk to you. You seem like the type who’d eat him alive.” Sol and Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki have that much in common, too. Maybe they’d make fast friends. She certainly adores Nihilego the way Sol seemed to adore them, his face shining in the darkness of granite cave.[break][break]
“Too many people have died in Hoenn, Sol. That’s the long and short of it.” Grim words, but words he thinks that the young man needs to hear. “Be honest with me. No matter what we say here, you’re gonna go back down in those caves? Have a nice look around, maybe run into Vortigern’s other mates.” A small pause. “That’s my Garchomp. The one I tamed.” The rest are but unruly mates.[break][break]
“…can’t say you’re wrong. If you have something to prove, you came to the right place.”

Sol was mid-scarf when Navy scolded him, leaving Sol no choice but to slowly shove the noodles into his mouth making a 'fwop, fwop, fwop' as he inhaled his food until the current chopstick-ful was devoured. "I already burnt it"

Sol took a minute to breathe, using both hands to hold the complimentary glass of water he had been served as he chugged it to soothe his scalding throat. He exhaled, hard. "That's good."

"Although I can hardly believe you'd make that assumption based on one interaction and my physical appearance." It was rather obvious that Sol was merely feigning his offense, evidenced markedly by the slight upward tilt at the corner of his lips, "Kidding! I do have a bad habit and a history of being a man-eater, perhaps unfortunately so."

He shrugged off the thought, no point in thinking of the past, or of hypotheticals. He's wasted too much time on both. "People die every day...but I won't - if that's what you're implying. I'm lucky." Which was true. He was lucky! Insanely so. His luck always came with a price, though.

"Oh, for sure. You'd have to lock me up to stop me and even then it probably wouldn't be an effective solution. Again, I'm really lucky." Sol raked his fingers through his hair, "Vortigern is a nice name. Very regal. Fitting of a Garchomp. I take it you favor dragons, then? I've always favored fairy types, myself."

In truth, Sol favored psychic types for the longest. That's why Circe was his first. Plus, he liked the fact that Gothitelle could allegedly see the end of everything. As a Gothorita all she ever seemed to do was stare at things he could never seem to see, though.

"After my run-in with Nihilego, I believe that's true. Hoenn will be the grand stage on which I make my mark...or I will fail horribly and everything will have been for nothing." His voice, which had grown grim, became chipper and sweet, practiced, "But! It won't! Because, again, I'm very lucky."

He’s honest. Gabe was honest, too. His honesty earned him an early grave. Sol relies on luck and pluck to keep him from the same fate. Luck runs out eventually. Lady Luck’s fickle, especially when she isn’t a man’s type.[break][break]
So, the sheriff sighs once more. He digs into his ramen, thinking about how he wants to go about this. There’s only one way forward.[break][break]
“First thing’s first, if you wanna help the League, you’re actually gonna help the League. No pretense, no cover story. Sounds like you’re pretty confident in your own skills. If you want them to help you, you’ve gotta help them. Quid pro quo.” He thinks that’s simple enough to understand.[break][break]

"Quid pro quo, indeed. If the League helps me, I'll help it. But I've gotten far on being selfish, I won't just do something for nothing, ya feel?" He wondered how Navy was able to speak like he knew there was something Sol was hiding. Did he know?

"Hey, for the record, I wasn't running around in the cave. I stood my ground and kept a level head. Credit where credit is due!" He harrumphed. It was true, though, that Sol had a habit of running towards certain death. But he escaped it every time!

"Don't tell me you actually think THIS," he gestures at all of himself, "Doesn't have a home? I'd rather die. And I mean that. I need hot water... Although, a place in Dewford would be nice and it would keep me closer to the cave, but I do have an apartment in Mauville. Rent is just dreadful though." Sol ate more of his ramen, no need to let it go to waste!

He almost chokes on the ramen. "Ewite Fouw?!" He exclaims through a mouthful.

"Wow. Whaw did I tew you," He swallowed, "I'm lucky. I could've run into anyone or anything down there and yet it was you I bumped into..." Sol says that last bit more to himself than to Navy. Lady Luck loves him.

He takes another drink of his water, tries to regain his composure. "Alright, thanks, Dad. Super appreciate it." Sol snickers and rolls his eyes, but the light flush of his cheeks showcases his embarrassment. It feels weird talking to anyone about his 'conquests' besides, it's not like there was anything worth talking up.

"It all sounds great...just one question, though, well I have a few. But for now just one: Why did your parents name you Navy? It's a weird first name and that's coming from Solstice."

“Name on my birth certificate’s Michael.” He hates the name, and makes no secret of that. The hatred is gentler now than it was twenty years ago, before Galar. Piping white-hot fire cools to mere disapproval, though not at Sol for asking the question.[break][break]
“Michael Navidson, if you wanna know legal names. Not like you can’t look it up anyway. Gabe started it, back when I got my first Pokemon.” His brother was all smiles and braces back then. Optimistic, like nothing in the world could hurt him. He, too, was a child blessed by luck.[break][break]
“Sports movies were big back then, especially ones about trainers. Red and Blue started it all, two kids with weird names tackling Kanto’s circuit, having to fight at the end. Gabe thought all the best trainers had color names, so he called me Navy.” He hasn’t told anyone the story in a while, at least directly. Most people don’t care to ask.[break][break]
“Got a sister named Luna?” He quips, amused that Sol would point out the eccentricity of his own name. A laugh punctuates the question.[break][break]
“Apartment in Mauville…Arceus…how are you affording that?” He asks while sipping on green tea. “Barely managed to afford the place in Slateport I had before moving here, and I was living off of ramen packs and wonderbread.”

Sol gave a thoughtful, "Hm." Well, all that explains why he didn't go by Mikey or something along those lines. Plus, Sol was rather sure Mikey was something you named a Turtwig. [break][break]

"No. But I have a Kirlia by that name. My brother's name is Jasper. Which is sort of like a color, I guess. I think it's like a red? He was one of the best trainers I had ever seen. Probably would have finished a couple of the League circuits if we had ever stayed in one place long enough." And maybe in a way, he finally would. Some part of him, at least. [break][break]

Sol tried not to dwell on what his condition had robbed his family of. His eyes reclaimed that far off look, silence overtaking him once more. All of that time, money, hope...and what did it get them? [break][break]

"Huh? Oh! I get by." Also known as: His dad pays for it. "I'm doing the cheap diet though. Not that I eat much to begin with, heh. I was able to get a month by month lease so, if the offer is still on the table, I'd be happy to move to Dewford." [break][break]

Navy was so...kind. Genuinely kind, at least it seemed that way. It was jarring. There didn't seem to be any ulterior motive - he wanted Sol to be safe during wartime. Point blank. Period. That's it. [break][break]

Sol's head dipped sheepishly, "Thank you, Navy."

“Don’t mention it.” The sheriff said without any notable change in tone or demeanor. “Just keep yourself safe. All I ask.” A fistful of pokedollars are placed on the counter, payment for their meal. Their host accepts it graciously, the sheriff telling them to keep the change.[break][break]
“Gotta make another call. Get the paperwork going. You’ll get buried in the stuff soon enough.” From across the ocean, he senses paxton concordas and shivers. The taxman cometh. “We’ll get your place down here sorted out. Not really any ceremony on my end, just gotta hand you a key. Got some basic furnishings, and it’s by the beach.” A small smile.[break][break]
“Pretty nice, when there’s not freak bad weather.” He’s walking towards the door, beckoning Sol to the truck outside.[break][break]
“For now, let’s get down to the morgue. You wanna dissect that Nihilego, yeah? Coroner’s probably finished up. We’ll get you some time with ‘em before we ship it off to Ever Grande. Plus, you’ll need my help if you wanna have a look inside.”[break][break]

"We'll see," Sol smirked. Obviously, he would keep himself safe...in his downtime, but if there was an opportunity to get what he wanted, he would sacrifice life and limb to get it. Sol gets up when the sheriff does, thinking about how much time he'll likely end up spending with him. He thinks it will be odd to see the same person all the time. Especially, someone who is invested in his survival and his future.

"Buried under paperwork is where I'm the happiest. Had my life turned out differently, I think I would've been content being some paper-pushing bureaucrat," Sol covered his smirk with his hand, "Well, maybe not. I have a soul - unlike most bureaucrats." Thoughts of frustrated phone calls and desperate pleading came to mind. He shook those thoughts away, blinking away his thousand-yard stare.

"There could be a little ceremony. I wouldn't complain. Maybe play the trumpet a little? Or the bugle? Whatever brass instrument that's played at events - you know the one, right?" He mimed playing the horn tapping the imaginary buttons of the instrument.

"No need to tell me twice! I am, literally, so excited about this!" Sol was all but jumping for joy as the pair departed, practically vaulting into the truck's passenger seat.
